MIAMI -- With plenty of rest and enough run support, All-Star Tim Hudson got his second half off to a winning start. Hudson pitched into the eighth inning after having eight days between starts, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Miami Marlins 5-3 on Saturday night. "He was sharp, Im sure the added rest probably did benefit him," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. Hudson (8-6) came into the game with just five runs of support in his last five starts, but the Giants jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning, which was enough for the 39-year old veteran. He allowed one run and eight hits in 7 1-3 innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter while throwing 52 of his 81 pitches for strikes. "Obviously, this time of year, extra rest is usually welcomed," Hudson said. Hunter Pence drove in two runs and Pablo Sandoval had three hits for the Giants, who have won four of five. They are 54-43, the best record in the National League. "Im proud that we are in first place," Sandoval said. Giancarlo Stanton hit his National League-best 23rd home run for Miami, which has lost six straight. It was his second home run in two days after not hitting one for three weeks. "Thats good, back-to-back homers," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "Hopefully that gets him going. We definitely need him. Hes the guy, so its good to see him have a couple big at-bats and a couple home runs." Marlins All-Star starter Henderson Alvarez (6-5) departed with a bruised left shin after being hit by a grounder by Joe Panik in the third. Alvarez threw out Panik at first before limping off. X-rays were negative and he plans on making his next start on July 24. "It got me in between the bone and the flesh," Alvarez said. "It got me pretty good. Luckily Im fine, just a bump. I anticipate on making my next start. We have to give it a couple days to see how it heals, but as of now Im looking to pitch in Atlanta." Sergio Romo allowed a home run to Stanton to lead off the ninth and departed after allowing a two-out double to Marcell Ozuna. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit an RBI single off Santiago Casilla to pull the Marlins within 5-3, but Adeiny Hechavarria lined out to end the game as Casilla picked up his fifth save in eight opportunities. Giants first baseman Brandon Belt left the game in the third due to dizziness, but not before hitting an RBI double. Belt was struck by a ball in the face during batting practice when two balls were thrown at him at the same time. "He seemed OK," Bochy said. "Of course he had the big hit to get us going and then he started complaining of headaches, got a little nauseous, dizziness." Belt will be held out of Sundays game and will be given a concussion test. Miami trailed 2-1 when Alvarez left the game and was replaced by Sam Dyson. Dyson was sharp in his first inning of work before allowing three runs in the fourth, which included hitting a batter and walking two. His bases-loaded walk to Hudson gave the Giants a 3-1 lead. Pence stretched the lead to 5-1 with a two-run single. Casey McGehee had an RBI single in the first to give the Marlins an early lead. "I dont think about things like that," he said. "Its not about homers. Its about helping the team." Beltran ended his drought with a tiebreaking shot, Adam Wainwright earned his 18th win and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Washington 4-3, eliminating the Nationals from playoff contention. Looking for their first NL Central title since 2009, the Cardinals maintained a two-game lead over Cincinnati and Pittsburgh with five to play. All three teams are headed to the post-season. The Reds and Pirates both won Monday night, clinching at least a wild-card berth when Washington lost. St. Louis secured no worse than a wild card on Sunday. The Nationals won the NL East last season with 98 wins, but were eliminated by St. Louis in the division series. One year later, they were knocked out by the Cardinals again. "It doesnt feel too good," manager Davey Johnson said. "We gave it a good fight. We just came up short. "Now, were spoilers. So its not over for us." Beltrans two-run homer in the fifth off rookie Tanner Roark broke a 2-all tie. It was his team-leading 24th of the season and first in 91 at-bats since Aug. 24. "The last thing I was thinking about there was a home run," Beltran said. "Ive been scuffling a little at the plate, but the way for that to go away is to keep playing and continue to swing the bat." Wainwright (18-9) gave up three runs and seven hits over seven-plus innings. He struck out five, giving him a career-high 214 on the season. "This was a great team win. Everybody did their part," Wainwright said. Jayson Werth hit a two-run homer on the 15th pitch of the game. Wainwright then retired nine in a row and allowed just one run on five hits the rest of the way. He moved into second in the NL in wins behind Washington right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, who has 19. "The first inning, sometimes great teams are going to put a couple runs together like that," Wainwright said. "The key is to keep pitching and limit the damage." St.dddddddddddd. Louis manager Mike Matheny was impressed with the way Wainwright bounced back from the slow start. "Its amazing that once he gets going, how different his stuff looks," Matheny said. "It doesnt matter what he looks like early, hes going to put it together." Trevor Rosenthal got two outs for his first career save. Roark (7-1) gave up four runs and five hits in five innings for his first loss in four starts. He went 45 2-3 innings before allowing his first home run. "I didnt have fastball command and I was getting behind hitters," Roark said. "If you do that against a good team, theyre going to hit your mistakes." Washington closed to 4-3 in the eighth on singles by Anthony Rendon and Steve Lombardozzi and a groundout from Ryan Zimmerman. St. Louis reliever Carlos Martinez got Werth to ground out with a runner in scoring position to end the threat. The Cardinals climbed within 2-1 on a run-scoring single by Yadier Molina in the first. They tied it on successive singles from David Freese, Daniel Descalso and Shane Robinson in the fourth. Robinson replaced Matt Holliday in the lineup. Holliday was a game-time scratch for the second night in a row due to back spasms. He is day to day. "He thought it was going to loosen up better than it did," Matheny said.
