BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sergei Bobrovsky and the Columbus Blue Jackets keep finding ways to win. The Blue Jackets gave up a game-tying goal with 24.9 seconds to play, but used Ryan Johansens shootout goal to extend their winning streak to six games in a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. "Every night we have to find a way to get points," said Bobrovsky, who made 26 saves and didnt allow a goal in the shootout. "Thats why we play. Its our goal to be in the playoffs and we have to take points to be there. It doesnt matter how and who we play." Columbus rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to take the lead on a Brandon Dubinsky goal in the third period, but had to regroup again after Myers goal sent the game to overtime. "Its a tough thing to give up a goal in the last minute of the game but this is a group thats faced adversity all season long," Dubinsky said. "And instead of cowering to it and conceding to just one point, we stuck our heads down and went after them. "Im really proud of this bunch and the way we stuck together through some adversity." David Savard and Matt Calvert also scored in regulation for Columbus. Tyler Myers had two goals for Buffalo, and Drew Stafford also scored. The Sabres have lost three straight. The Blue Jackets winning streak matches the longest in franchise history set on April 3, 2006. "Right now for me its just a stat," Columbus coach Todd Richards said. "Weve done a good job putting ourselves back in the fight and right in the middle of it." Columbus improved to 24-20-4 after winning just 14 of its first 35 games. Dubinsky said the win streak speaks volumes of his teams improvement. "It says were finding ways to win games and were getting points," Dubinsky said. "Were getting some swagger here and some confidence. The Blue Jackets played Friday night at home against Washington as Buffalo looked to capitalize on a hot start from the line of Tyler Ennis, Matt Moulson and Drew Stafford. The Sabres struck just 59 seconds into the game when Moulson sent a soft pass across the ice to Myers, who had crept in from the right point and lifted a shot over Bobrovsky to put Buffalo up 1-0. Columbus countered when a one-time shot from Savard off the right half wall caught Ryan Miller out of position to tie the score at 6:19. The tie lasted just 28 seconds. A poor Blue Jackets breakout left Ennis alone in front of Bobrovsky. The Sabres centre slid the puck to Stafford at the left post, and he slid it into the open net at 6:47. "They played a tough game last night," said Ennis, who finished with two assists and seven shots on goal. "We wanted to jump on them early." Miller made an athletic save on a 2-on-1 break midway through the first period, reaching behind his body to make a glove save on RJ Umberger. He finished with 32 saves. The Blue Jackets tied it at 2 after a Myers boarding penalty gave them the games first power play. Calvert whiffed on a backhand attempt, but pushed a second chance past Miller at 12:44 of the first. Buffalo had a goal disallowed 24 seconds into the second period. Moulson was judged to have used a distinct kicking motion to put the puck behind Bobrovsky. "The league is screaming for goals and all of a sudden, I dont know how you can kick it and try to stop at the same time," Sabres interim head coach Ted Nolan said. A power-play goal gave Columbus its first lead at 11:21, as Dubinsky took advantage of crowded Buffalo crease with his rebound goal. The Blue Jackets needed a right pad save from Bobrovsky on Moulson during a late Sabres power play, but finished the second period with a 3-2 lead. Buffalo didnt score on its first three power plays, and the last was an abbreviated one when Stafford was hauled down behind the Columbus net with 36.4 seconds to play in regulation. Nolan called timeout, Buffalo won the faceoff in Columbus zone and Myers sent a wrist shot past Bobrovsky. Myers almost scored a third goal in overtime, but his low shot went wide of the goal. Johansens game-deciding goal required patience. Miller stayed with the third-year mans shootout attempt until an opening appeared just as Johansen reached the crease. "I thought the play was dead, I really did," Richards said. "When he got there, I thought, Oh, hes got nothing and he got it up quick on his glove side." The Blue Jackets are off until Tuesday, when theyll host Los Angeles in the first of a three-game homestand. Buffalo is 6-1-3 in its past 10 home games after beginning the season 3-12-1 at First Niagara Center. Theyll next face Florida on Tuesday in the second of three straight at home. Cabrera was first on the disabled list from June 27-July 20 with tendinitis in his left knee. Roger Maris Jersey .com) - The disappointing Ottawa Senators hope to record consecutive wins for the first time since early November, as they visit the Boston Bruins on Friday for the opener of a home-and-home series.TORONTO - Jose Bautista entered Wednesdays play at or near the top of most of baseballs important offensive categories. The 33-year-old is the league leader with 34 walks. His 1.058 OPS and 191 OPS+ are the best in the game. Bautistas hit nine home runs, which ties him for fourth in the majors. Hes reached base safely in each of the Blue Jays 33 games to begin the year. Thats a club record. "I think Ive had a pretty strong first month, as strong as I might have had ever in my career," Bautista told TSN.ca during a conversation in Philadelphia. "But the seasons long and its hard to look at small samples and how thats going to portray into a complete season. I try not to pay attention to those things and just focus on the preparation and the work and my effort and hopefully at the end of the year everythings taken care of itself." As teams around the league rely more heavily on spray charts and advanced offensive data, Bautista, like most sluggers around the league, often hits with three infielders on the left side of second base. The percentages show that if Bautista hits the ball on the ground, most of the time hell pull it. With that in mind, hitting coach Kevin Seitzer has encouraged Bautista to occasionally take pitches the other way. Manager John Gibbons believes the approach helps Bautista stay on breaking pitches down and away. He sees those often as opposing pitchers often work around him or, at least, are particularly careful about keeping the ball out of the middle of the strike zone. "The only difference I see with him is hes taking some hits the other way and I think its making him a tougher out," said manager John Gibbons. "You hear some people who complain about, well, hes a home run hitter, youve got to do it this way. Well, you know what? His home run numbers havent suffered one bit." Bautistas coaches and teammates took notice of his approach in the 10th inning of Tuesday nights 6-5 win over the Phillies. Melky Cabrera led off with a single. Bautista worked a 2-2 count and with the infield pulled around to the third base side he pushed a 93 miles per hour fastball through the gaping hole where the second baseman would usually stand. Cabrera advanced to third on the play and one out later scored the game-winning run on Juan Franciscos sacrifice fly. Manager John Gibbons called it "winning baseball." "Its good to see, thats what winninng players and winning teams do, the little stuff," said Jose Reyes.dddddddddddd "In that situation he didnt try to hit a two-run home run and pop it up to the infield or something. He just tried to move Melky over, he saw that huge space there at second base and he hit the ball that way, first and third and we win the game right there." Outfield coach Tim Leiper paid Bautista the ultimate praise last week, equating his pregame preparation and in-game adjustments to that of a coach. Bautista doesnt want the label but he is involved in every pitch. From the dugout hes studying the opposing pitcher, watching for tendencies that may indicate which type of pitch will be thrown. Not a base stealer himself, Bautista tries to help his faster teammates get a read on a pitchers move. Defensively, hell involve himself in outfield positioning based on his extensive knowledge of hitters. "I try to pay attention to things like that and I share all kinds of information with my teammates," said Bautista. "I also encourage them to share stuff that they know and information that they have with me. I like to listen to that kind of stuff and put it into my database, I guess." Gibbons recalls a game in Kansas City early last year when injuries to Jose Reyes and Brett Lawrie forced Bautista from his usual spot in right field and in to play third base. Bautista would frequently hover around the mound in between outs, giving the pitcher a scouting report on the next hitter. "Joses not just out there playing," said Gibbons. "He studies this and hes paying attention to whats going on. Hes played against a lot of these guys over the years so hes got a pretty good idea of what they do." The Blue Jays entered Wednesdays action with a record of 16-17 following a 4-4 road trip to Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Like on their previous road trip, they left some games on the table due to poor, late-game pitching. Bautista isnt panicking, however, because the American League East remains tight six weeks into the season. Torontos just a game and a half back of first-place Baltimore. "The only thing that would matter if we were 15 games back," said Bautista. "That would mean wed dug ourselves a big hole to come out of. From that perspective it doesnt really matter. What matters is how we play from here on out and weve got to focus on that."
